Split Rock Lighthouse is one of Minnesota's most treasured landmarks. It is one of the most visited lighthouses in the U.S. and, I can attest, one of the most photographed. Its purpose was to protect crews and ships of the iron ore industry, paramount to the history of northern Minnesota and the Great Lakes. On a personal note, it was where my parents took me on my first vacation as a child. I fell in love with lighthouses at that moment. Surely, at that early age, I thought I was looking out at the ocean below! Forty-six years later, and with visits to many other lighthouses, I can truly state that nothing can compare to her.
