Winner:Gratia Alta Countryman
From MN150
Winning Nomination
Gratia Countryman was director of the Minneapolis Public Library from 1903 through 1936, and under her leadership the library grew to its essential role in the lives of people of all walks of life. She was a role model for women in leadership, and also an activist for women's rights. For a fine treatment of her life, I recommend Jane Pejsa's Gratia Countrymen: Her Life, Her Loves and Her Library.
