Winning Nomination

Fredrick L. McGhee was Minnesota's first black lawyer and first black professional of any kind. The first black lawyer to try a capital case, first to take a case to State Supreme Court. McGhee made his name as a trial lawyer. He was a founder of St. Peter Claver Church. McGhee, along with W.E.B. DuBois and others, founded the Niagara Movement. He founded Minnesota's first NAACP Chapter. Fred McGhee was Minnesota's greatest civil rights leader.
