He began as a clerk in a drug store and went on to establish the International Food Company which sold animal feed around the world. He is best known as the owner of the legendary Dan Patch, a race horse that still owns the 1-mile pacing record. He developed the Dan Patch Railway, an electric line connecting Minneapolis and Northfield. The town of Savage is named after him as is Marian W. Savage elementary school.
