This early missionary: sent up from the diocese headquarters, which at that time were in Dubuque, Iowa, since Mendota was in Iowa Territory; introduced the name for the state's capitol; and with the help of Cretin and Ravoux, successfully transformed the character of the town and gave St. Paul the beginnings of its indelible Catholic stamp.
