In 1857, John S. Harris planted his first orchard in La Crescent, Minnesota. He is responsible for apple growing in Minnesota. Before his work to develop apple varieties that could withstand Minnesota's harsh winters, no one was able to grow apples in Minnesota. He planted thousands of trees and hundreds of varieties, a full half of which he said were complete and utter failures.

Harris also went on to be world-famous for his work, was a founding member of the Minnesota Horticultural Society and was the first to obtain funding for agricultural schools, among other things.
