Hoxie Rathbun was contracted to carry the mail between Mankato, Minnesota and Sioux City, Iowa 16-months before Minnesota became a state. During a Christmas delivery run he became stranded in a blizzard. He sought refuge in a dugout and was discovered by two men who took him to the Ole Holthe cabin in Jackson, Minnesota where he died from exposure on December 26, 1856.
