Hormel Strike

The year-long strike maintained by the members of Local P-9 at the Hormel plant lit a bold, bright fire in the midst of a dark time for American workers. Led by president Jim Guyette, the workers built a national coalition of support in other Hormel plants, among other local unions, and with progressive activists. They galvanized working people across the country to rejoin the struggle for a living wage, humane working conditions, and a secure future.

The strike reminds us of Minnesota's long tradition of labor activism. The members of Local P-9 raised important and still relevant questions about working people's share in the profits of their labor, and the relationship between corporate power, government action, and workers' rights.
