Hibbing, MN

The world's largest open pit mine. I have a historic framed picture of the Hall Reist mine. Hibbing high school was built during a iron mining boom time. The high school auditorium boasts Polish chandeliers and paintings. My grandfather, LeRoy Wilkerson, was a teacher at the high school. Everyone who went to school at Hibbing knew him.

Hibbing High School. When it opened it was one of largest and most glamorous high schools in the nation. The auditorium was patterned after the Capitol Theatre in New York and has crystal chandeliers which change color, a marble staircase, etc.

Nominated is the very unique and interesting story of North Hibbing in the 1950s where the entire town was literally put on trucks and moved in order to mine the rich ore found underneath it.
