Came from Washington, CT, in 1834, with his brother Samuel as a missionary to the Dakota Indians. Developed the Dakota alphabet, published bilingual Dakota-English newspaper, served in Minnesota Territorial legislature, founded Oak Grove Presbyterian church in 1855, still an active congregation today, residence is on National Register of Historic Places, highly respected by Cloudman of the Dakota. Many of his original sermons and papers are preserved at the MHS.
