A pioneer in the study of Native American music. 1901-wrote down Dakota songs. 1907-recorded Chippewa music on North Shore Lake Superior. Collaborator of Bureau of American Ethnology of Smithsonian Institution--held title for 50 years. In the universal study of ethnomusicology, she was the first--from MN--before Zoltan Kodaly and Bela Bartok did similar local research in Europe. Mother of ethnomusicology around the world.
