Ernest Oberholtzer, a pioneer conservationist, has been called the original architect of the border wilderness. He was instrumental in establishing the international forest reserve known as the Quetico-Superior Region in 1909. He waged environmental campaigns beginning in the 1920s to stop the damming of rivers and lakes in the Region. The movement Ober led would eventually produce the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota and Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario. Ernest Oberholtzer is one of the great unsung heroes of the American conservation movement.
