I met Dorothy Molter of Pine Island while canoeing the BWCA when I was a junior in high school. We spent several hours talking with her, having one of her homemade root beers which I still get from the James Page Brewery. Not a better root beer around in MN than Dorothy's! She lived on that island year 'round and was very independent, and self-sufficient. Her late evening paddles into shore to get supplies in Ely so she was ready for visitors the next day. She cut ice out of the lake all winter to fill her ice house for the summer. Her island home was a welcome respite for many a BWCA paddler!
She was a classic Minnesota pioneer of sorts. Still living off the land and opening her home to many people. A Minnesota classic if you will.
Dorothy represents the hardy, nature-loving person who falls in love with MN and makes it his/her home for a lifetime. In spite of harsh winter conditions, love for MN overcomes all! Dorothy represents all of us who started life somewhere else but fell in love with our adopted home.
