Chuck Rowland was one of the original founders in 1950s Los Angeles of the Mattachine Society, the earliest gay rights organization of the modern era. The work he, Harry Hay, and the other founders did to begin the cause of non-discrimination was crucial to one of the modern social and political movements for equality very central, obviously, in public debates today.
