Charles Scrutchins

Lawyer Charles Scrutchins of Bemidji, Minnesota was one of the black lawyers hired by the NAACP to defend the black men charged in the Duluth lynching rape trials of 1920. Scrutchins, a native of Richmond, Virginia, graduated from the University of Michigan in 1893. He later moved to Bemidji, Minnesota and set up practice. He eventually married a white lady and became a successful court attorney. In Duluth he convinced a jury to free William Miller, one of the six Negroes charged with rape in the Duluth lynching trials.
