Minnesota is the home to all national champs in broomball and 2 world champions. Ask anyone internationally about broomball and they will always bring up the Minnesota teams as tops in the world. How does this fit into Minnesota's history? Minnesota was the first state in the USA to play broomball. Pictures from Logan Park in the 1930s, and St. Paul Winter Carnival movies shot at Lake Phalen, provide evidence of this. It was Robert Nordstrom of the Mpls. Park Board who organized leagues for adult and youths in the late 1950s and is nicknamed the the Grandfather of Broomball Minnesota has hosted many national and international tournaments and this year will hold the World Championships at the Schwans Super rinks in Blaine October 31-November 4. Broomball has become a Minnesota staple, from high school ice festivals, to games on a frozen lake, or leagues outdoors or indoors at Augsburg and Rosemount Arenas. The St. Paul Winter Carnival is host to the biggest broomball tournament in the world. Most tournaments draw over 60 teams from the state. You can ask a person outside Minnesota what broomball is and they will think it is curling or sweeping balls into a net, but ask a Minnesotan and they will tell you they played it somewhere along their life.
