This important pilgrimage site on the North Shore of Lake Superior represents one of the first introductions of the religion of Christianity and its major influence on Minnesota history and culture. Father Baraga's love for people and intense missionary activity is perfectly represented in this simple cross monument built in honor of his treacherous journey across the lake with an assistant in a small boat in order to visit the Native American afflicted with severe sickness at Grand Portage.
