This 6,000-lb cheese was created in Pine Island, MN on Sept. 22, 1911. It was the largest cheese to date and was shipped to the World's Fair in Chicago. It was created from 22 surrounding factories. It was the individuals who took part in this project who made this area of Minnesota the cheese capital of the state, and maybe the world. The cheese industry was a significant part of the state's history because it has had a lasting impression on our state's identity to this day. Pine Island was the center of the Minnesota Cheese Producers Association, which eventually became Land O' Lakes. That is why this 6,000-lb cheese should be identified as a significant changing point in our state's history.
